I come from a software/IT background, first working as a computer lab consultant at a community college in upstate NY. While I worked briefly as a programmer I spent most of the early part of my career in IT support, working for dial-up ISPs and as in-house internal support for various corporations. When the Dot-Com bubble burst I transitioned with the market and began to increasingly work as an independent contractor, working across the country with companies such as HP on national roll-outs for both big chains and mom and pop's, doing break/fix and installs, and then training, working with and managing groups of techs who were doing the same.
